Maine Pottery Dinnerware - MPD -

About Us

The Maine Pottery Dinnerware Company has, well let me think, one administrator, one potter, one glazing technician, one glaze chemist and one kiln engineer.  All these people happen to be me, feel free to call me Joe.  So, we (I) all joined together in a common effort to form this startup in January 2005, although the planning has been in the works for at least a year.

What We Are Trying to Do

Well, the normal stuff I guess, provide an exceptional product while making a profit.  But beyond that, this is my vision ....I would like to build this company into one of the foremost creators of handcrafted functional stoneware in the United States and then... I'd like to sell it to my employees (Not the employees mentioned above ....employees to come ... real people!) You see, here in Maine we have an abundance of talented craftspeople and artists who just need a chance to succeed.  I hope to give them that chance. Opportunities are becoming harder to find in Maine. Skilled crafts persons, even potters, find their work going overseas.  I believe that good craftsmanship at a reasonable price is the solution.

My Background

It's kind of an odd story,  I have been making pottery either full or part time for about six or seven years.  I am a full time participant in my wife's business, Cabin Pottery, ( www.cabinpottery.com ) located in Edgecomb Maine presently....Although we are looking at settling in the western mountains of Maine at some future point in time....  I digress....anyway, I have six years of business school in my tool kit and held professional financial and accounting positions for about seven years.  That seemed to be long enough. My lovely wife (Andrea) was the catalyst for the change.  She is an extremely talented painter and potter as well as inspiration and support for my new venture. (She is also donating some mud slinging time )

Time Horizon

The plan is to be able to afford a payroll , based strictly on The Maine Pottery Dinnerware Company, sometime in 2006 (extend to 08 due to family illness.) (Hopefully sooner)  I would like the company to be employee owned by 2020 at the latest, given good reception by the public.  It seems like a long way away now but how time flies.

Conclusion

Well, that's about it.  I enjoy making pots and running a business so this seems the logical route. Being a life long Maine resident, I'd like to give a little back to my state and those who live here.  Thanks for taking the time to read my page of "Whats and Whys".  Hope all is well in your world, Joe.
